WHAT IS THE TOVA?

The Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA) is a computerized continuous performance test in which the person is asked to watch a randomized series of targets and non-targets on a computer screen and press a microswitch whenever a target appears.  This test is very useful in evaluating attention, impulsivity, reaction time, and variability of reaction time, or consistency.

The TOVA is usually given before neurotherapy to obtain a baseline which can be compared with performance later in the treatment.  Although usually used with attention deficit disorder, it is also very useful with other problems, such as brain injury and multiple chemical sensitivity which result in attention deficits.

There is little change in performance from practice alone, so the test can be regiven whenever a quantification of progress is desired.
